The-Dream - Love vs. Money
To begin, let’s get one thing out of the way: this isn’t a new Love/Hate. When you accept the fact that The-Dream’s second album just ain’t as good as his (dare I say) classic debut, some amazing music awaits you.
It starts of ridiculous. The first single, ‘Rockin That Shit’, is really good the first listen, at third it’ll be on repeat. His voice wraps itself around the synthetic brass. ‘Walking on the Moon’ is even better. It’s subtly Michael Jackson, Kanye thankfully sticks to rapping and the simple, spacious hook tattoos to the brain. Unfortunately, the album never really reaches those dizzying heights again.
‘My Love’ is a poor man’s ‘We Belong Together’. Not bad, certainly not amazing. Amazing vocal performance by Mariah.
I think there’s a little bit too much R. Kelly on the album. I don’t mean ‘Kelly’s 12 Play’, which has a nice little topic, but ‘Put It Down’ and ‘Sweat It Out’. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great songs. I just don’t understand what The-Dream is trying to achieve. Prove that he is an excellent copycat? It’s not like it’s a shortage of R. Kelly songs in the world.
‘Take You Home 2 My Mama’ is simply amazin though. Not much else to say.
‘Love vs Money pt 1′ is cool with some fantastic keyboard hooks and bass drops. The second part, however, is the worse cut on the album, but thankfully the only song that is completely rubbish.
‘Fancy’ is a wierd little thing. How often do you hear french accordion on an rnb album? Even if I suspect that I like the song more in theory than in practice, it’s still nice to hear something different.
And that is why you have to love him. If there’s something contemporary rnb is lacking, it’s strong personalities. Most of the time The-Dream is so unique that his only competition is himself. This time he lost, but I’m sure he’ll put up another good fight in the future.

I must say I agree with pretty much everything you say. If it wasn’t for LoveHate, I think I would love this album more than I actually do. Now it’s a bit of a letdown, though it has a bunch of great songs and is listenable throughout with very few exceptions.
One thing is for sure; The-Dream is here to stay.
first off - i love the blog.
in regards to your review, i can’t grasp how any dream fan would have an issue with Love Vs Money Pt. 2 .. its such a well written & produced song and the Love Vs Money / Love Vs Money 2 is clearly a direct reference to She Needs My Love / Nikki from Love/Hate making it even more amazing.
If I had to pick a lull on the album it would be “My Love” although i can’t discredit him for that because its a wise business decision.
“Sweat It Out” has its mid 90’s R Kelly influences but it also has its Teddy Riley early 90’s vocal harmony influences towards the end, with that said, from the moment Dream started his campaign as an artist he’s admitted his style is a mash of R Kelly/T-Pain but more refined lyrically.
While we’re on the Kell’s subject, I can’t remember the last time he made a cuttin song as great as Put It Down or Sweat It Out.
But fuck it right? Its all subject to opinion.
I think that “Fancy” is one of THE best r&b songs I’ve heard in years. This dude is killing the commercial r&b game right now. The Dream is a talented guy. Not as hot as album number 1 though.

Good review, but I totally cosign with Affinity (I also heart this blog! :)
Love vs Money Part 2 is a GREAT song! I’m surprised you didn’t care for it! That was one of the first to grab me! It is a direct scalding to ex-wife Nivea (I assume that is who he is alluding to). I loved Love/Hate, but this album is better. There, I said it! I love everything about this album, save for the last track with Lil Jon of course. But special consideration goes out for Put it Down, LvsM Part II, Mr. Yeah & Right side of my Brain.
Ya’ll can read my reivew here if interested :D
